Ancient Mayan Chukum Natural Finishes
Chukum a Mayan heritage for the world!
An ancient stucco technique used by the Maya in their architectural practices over a millennium ago, is made from the resin sap and bark of the Havardia Albicans tree. The process consists of collecting and boiling the sap and bark twice, followed by a mixture with white cement and limestone. This amalgamation results in Chukum paste, which forms a waterproof layer that protects the underlying structure from water damage. In addition, Chukum exhibits qualities that contribute to temperature regulation, thus reducing costs and protecting the structure from extreme temperatures.
The natural finish achieved through the ancient Mayan technique, Chukum, is still prevalent in contemporary architecture because of its inherent elegance. The finish presents a spectrum of colors, ranging from ocher and warm tones to soft and light shades. The application of Chukum on various surfaces produces natural, organic, minimalist or rustic appearances, maintaining a connection to the past while embracing modern design trends.
Benefits of Chukum
